At a Glance

Wazi Vision is a Ugandan company that has developed an innovative and low-cost process to produce hand-crafted eye-glasses from recycled plastic. Using a VR/Laptop application to perform vision tests and connect with patients, the company solves problems of medical access for rural and urban people, helping Africans ‘see beyond.’

Vision
To be the leading provider of functional and affordable eye wear in Africa and Asia.

Mission
To manufacture affordable eye glasses from recycled material for low income populations in Africa and Asia.

Business Model

Wazi Vision innovates the way eye-tests are done using a newly developed VR goggle/Laptop system. The system does all needed eye-tests, provides a prescription and is much cheaper than the classical solutions in the market. Wazi Vision manufactures eye glasses from recycled material such as plastic and paper, cutting the cost by more than 80% compared to the available solutions on the market for eye glasses. Wazi Vision is taking the solution directly to schools helping young people. Furthermore placing the systems within health centers helps to overcome the non existing eye-care situation in many rural parts of Uganda.

Impact

Students constitute a particularly vulnerable group, where myopia may have a great impact on learning capability, career choice, self-esteem and educational potential, as well as economic cost to the family and government. Wazi is addressing those 89 % of visually impaired people living in low and middle income countries. Wazi generated 8 jobs for local women meaningfully employed. Until now 4.532 test are made and childrem impacted. Over 700 eye glasses are sold to date and more than 70 eye glasses have been donated
