Winners of the 2019 KfW Awards

Berlin (Germany), October 2019. GreenTec Capital is very proud to report that Boreal Light GmbH (Boreal Light) has been selected as the Berlin-state, National, and People’s Choice winner of the national “KfW Award Gründen 2019”. The awards were presented at a ceremony at the German Founders’ and Entrepreneurs’ Days (deGUT) held at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) on October 17th, 2019 in Berlin.

Co-Founder Ali Al-Hakim said: “As well all live on the same planet the time to adopt a global mindset is now. Far too many people worldwide do not have access to clean and hygienic water, which should in actuality be a human right. We are very happy to receive the prize money, which will help us to expand and impact more people, but of course we hope that winning this prize will call more attention and support to this globally pandemic problem. We are honoured and pleased to have been recognized as a company that can contribute to solving the challenges of tomorrow in a sustainable way.”

The Founders/Founding Award has been established by the German Development Bank KfW Banking Group in 1998 to innovative German companies in their first five years of operations. The awardees are selected by a jury comprised of representatives of KfW, politics, and business on the merits of innovation, creativity, and social good and environmental responsibility.  Applications meeting these criteria can come from any sector of industry. Founded in 2014, Boreal Light GmbH develops innovative solutions to provide access to affordable and hygienic access to clean drinking water to the world’s poorest populations. The company developed the robust and versatile Winture ® water-desalination system. The robust and scalable system can be adapted to range of input sources including sea-water and applied to a range of economically empowering applications including agriculture, aquaculture, and retail water sales. The company is currently active in Kenya and Uganda and has executed projects with charitable organizations in Somaliland and Yemen. Boreal Light is actively expanding and plans to enter markets in the South African Development Community by 2020.

Boreal Light won the national prize from among finalists from the 16 German federal states. The company received a total of €16,000 for the National, Berlin-State, and People’s choice awards and will use the funds to fund further expansion into the SADC. GreenTec is always proud to report on portfolio company achievements, co-founders Hamed Beheshti and Ali Al-Hakim have much to be proud of.
